About 2DTurbo
GPU Benchmarking and Desktop Background Tool
2DTurbo brings two-dimensional fluid motion to life through Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Powered by Metal on your Mac's GPU, it uses Fourier methods to simulate evolving turbulence in a domain that repeats horizontally and vertically.
Explore six flow modes: freely decaying turbulence, Von Karman flow past a cylinder, High-k forcing with Rayleigh friction, Rain, Circle and Mouse. Watch vortices form and interact, or click and drag in Mouse mode to stir the flow yourself.
Adjust the grid resolution, Reynolds number and time-stepping controls to explore different conditions. Decaying turbulence also offers automatic Reynolds number regulation based on palinstrophy. Live statistics show the flow's energy, enstrophy and simulation performance for GPU benchmarking.
Visualise vorticity, velocity, energy or stream function with 17 colour palettes, smooth gradients and HDR on supported displays. Adjust exposure to reveal detail and enable velocity-direction streamlines to follow the flow.
Enjoy the simulation full screen with seamless tiling that fills your display without stretching. Pause at any time to inspect the patterns or save a PNG snapshot for a tiled desktop background.
